Gahinga is a dormant volcano of 3,474 m on the Rwanda-Uganda border, sitting between Sabyinyo and Muhabura in the Mufumbiro chain that spans Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its name means "a small pile of stones" in the local Kinyarwanda/Rufumbira dialect.
The roughly 180 m wide caldera at the summit has become a swamp. The slopes carry afro-montane forest dominated by bamboo, which shelters endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.
